Profhilo® is a hyaluronic acid (HA) injectable treatment which is NOT a “filler” but used to improve skin quality. Profhilo® addresses skin laxity and signs of aging through the bio-stimulation of collagen, elastin and adipocytes (fats) stem cells that are lost through skin aging.

What is Profhilo®?

Profhilo® is a stabilized hybrid complex formulated with a high concentration of 64mg/2ml, 100% pure Hyaluronic Acid, which is thermally crosslinked through the patented NAHYCO® Hybrid Technology. The high and low molecular weight Hyaluronic Acid molecules bind itself through a myriad of bonds, forming new stabilised hybrid cooperative complexes without the use of chemical BDDE cross-links which can cause other side-effects. This new complex lasts in the skin for a longer period as compared to non-cross-linked HA and doesn’t impair the renewal of adipocytes (fats) stem cells in the skin. Treatment leads to remodelling of the Extra-Cellular Matrix (ECM) in terms of elasticity and support promoting and maintaining the viability of fibroblasts (cells that produce HA and collagen), keratinocyctes (skin cells), and adipocytes (fat cells).

  • Uses 100% pure hyaluronic acid
  • Combination of 32mg of hyaluronic acid (high molecular weight) and 32mg of hyaluronic acid (low molecular weight)
  • Stimulates elastin and collagen
  • Addresses signs of skin aging gradually, naturally

What are the benefits of Profhilo®?

  • Stimulates elastin, 4 types of collagen and hydration in the 3 main layers of the skin
  • Provides firming, tightening and mild lifting effect (lifting effect varies upon individuals) to the skin
  • Improves overall skin quality and hydration
  • Minimal pain and downtime

How is Profhilo® different from other HA injectable treatments?

  • Less injection points (5 per cheek; 10 for neck)
  • Bumps can subside within 24 hours
  • 2 sessions per 6-9 months compared to 3 sessions for some injection treatments
  • High concentration HA (64mg/2ml)
  • High and Low Molecular weight HA combination
  • NO BDDE cross-links (uses patented thermal energy to link molecules)
  • Stimulates elastin in skin in addition to collagen for elasticity
  • Stimulates Adipose-derived Stem Cells (ASC) which contribute to healing and maintaining skin structure and function

What areas can be treated?

Profhilo® can be injected to the cheeks and neck areas.

Is the treatment painful?

Profhilo® is most effective when injected into or below the lower part of the deep skin layer (dermis) where pain can be more intense. Therefore a numbing cream will be applied prior to the treatment to reduce the pain, but mild- moderate pain can be felt during the injection (individual variance of pain threshold). However, there are only 5 points of injection per cheek and 10 sites for the neck which is less than traditional skin booster treatments. After the procedure, the pain is usually gone.

How long does the process take in the clinic?

After cleansing by our trained therapist, numbing cream will be applied to the areas to be treated for about 30 minutes. After the numbing cream is removed, the procedure itself will take about 10-20 min depending on the areas to be treated. After the injection treatment, you will be brought back to your private room for a post-care treatment to enhance the recovery process. Therefore the total time needed may reach 1 – 1.5 hours in the clinic.

Do I have to stay home after the treatment?

You will have multiple swellings (“bumps”) and maybe some redness on the injection sites for 1-2 days after the treatment. You are advised to stay indoors for 24-48 hours after the treatment to avoid external damage from the sun, pollutants, or cosmetics. The visible “bumps” will usually subside within 24 hours.

You should not apply make-up for 24-48 hours to avoid unnecessary clogging of the injection sites which may lead to acne or infection. You should also avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, extreme temperatures, using saunas or Turkish baths, massages, strenuous exercise for one week after the injection.

When can I start to see results?

For optimal results, it is advised to do 2 sessions at 3-4 week intervals. Results may take more than 3-4 weeks after the last session and results may vary according to the individual due to genetic and environmental factors. You are reminded that this is NOT a “filler” injection for augmentation of the face, so obvious visible changes in facial features will not be seen.

Is PROFHILO® safe?

(PROFHILO® is US FDA approved and has the European CE mark approval)
PROFHILO® is a hyaluronic acid gel but in a less viscous state to allow the product to spread and distribute in a wider area. Other types of hyaluronic acid gel fillers are thicker (more viscous) and are mainly used to replace volume in specific small areas. Therefore, PROFHILO® risks of certain side effects are less than the thicker HA fillers, but you still need to be aware of reported side effects from hyaluronic acid “filler” products.

Early side effects can be pain, tenderness, redness, swelling, bruising or itching sensation in the treated area. These side effects can resolve within 2-3 days, but some symptoms like swelling or bruising can last up to 10-14 days or longer.

Late side effects of HA could be discoloration at the injection sites, granulomas (accumulation of hardened tissue), delayed allergic reactions, bumps or scars which may appear weeks or even months after the procedure.

Rarer and more serious complications include: abscesses (hard and swollen sores that may contain pus – may require surgical drainage and subsequent scarring); blocking of blood vessels (may be permanent) causing necrosis(damage/death of skin), blindness, or stroke. These complications are more relevant when injecting “thicker” HA fillers to localized areas in “bolus” for volume enhancement especially (but not limited) around the nose and eye areas.

A safety assessment of PROFHILO® published on 22 June 2020 (Cassuto et al., Safety Assessment of High- and Low- Molecular Weight Hyalurons (Profhilo®) as Derived from Worldwide Postmarketing Data, BioMed Research International, Vol 2020, Article ID 8159047, 9 pages) showed 12 adverse events from over 40,000 patients (and almost 300,000 syringes sold) from February 2015 to February 2018. Early onset reactions such as swelling, redness, bruising along with late-onset reactions such as swelling and nodules were reported. “In no case was the product held liable for direct damage.” All 12 events resolved without any complications.
