How does it work?

The Theraclear™ Acne Clearing System (The Theraclear™ System) combines intense pulse light with vacuum (suction) for the treatment of mild to moderate inflammatory acne (including acne vulgaris), comedonal acne and pustular acne. The vacuum is used to clear the pores of sebum and other foreign material that may be clogging it thus cleansing the pores of the cause of many acne lesions. Also, the suction pulls the skin physically closer to the source of light therapy enhancing the therapeutic effect.

STEP 1: Position
Handpiece is placed the on treatment area

STEP 2: Cleanse
Gentle pressure removes acne causing bacteria and sebum/dirt

STEP 3: Treat
Concentrated therapeutic light destroys bacteria and helps calm inflammation

STEP 4: Complete
Treatment is completed with pores cleansed
Most other devices used to treat acne are designed to destroy the p. acnes bacteria while leaving the sebum in the infundibulum. Since total destruction of the p. acnes population is nearly impossible, the bacteria repopulate the infundibulum so long as its food source and protection from oxygen remain.

On the other hand, Theraclear™, by removing the sebum, the two items p. acnes bacteria need to survive, food and protection from oxygen are gone creating a hostile environment for their return.

Is Theraclear™ painful?

Due to it being a NON-ABLATIVE device, it is very gentle and there is NO need for numbing cream. It is common to feel a slight warming of your skin and a light prickling feeling. Cooling air via the Zimmer Cryo6 device helps to reduce any discomfort from the heat produced by Theraclear™.

What can I expect during my treatment?

Your eyes will be first be protected with metal goggles. Then our doctor will begin treatment, by gently applying the Theraclear™ handpiece to your skin. You will first feel some suction as your skin is gently lifted towards the Theraclear™ device and also opening the pores for treatment. Next, there is a very short burst of heat when the Theraclear™ is fired. There can be a slight “burning smell” which is the facial hair and dead skin cells absorbing the light energy. Remember that since it is a NON-ABLATIVE device, so your skin does not get “burnt” at all if done properly. Cooling air via the Zimmer Cryo6 device helps to reduce any discomfort from the heat produced by Theraclear™.

During each session, the device is passed over the whole face with more concentration in area of concern.

After the treatment you will be brought back to your private room for post-care treatment to cool and calm the skin before you leave the clinic.

Is there any downtime?

Due to it being a NON-ABLATIVE device, there is NO downtime with Theraclear™. You may experience some redness or small bruises from the suction in sensitive areas that should resolve within a few hours, but no requirement for you to stay indoors or avoid cosmetic application afterwards. (Again, this is a NON-invasive treatment so no needles, no blood, no crusting after the treatment.) You are able to return to work, apply makeup and resume most of your activities immediately (Please avoid exercise 1-2 days before and after the treatment). However, it is advised to avoid excessive, prolonged sun exposure 2-3 weeks before and after the treatment.

What aftercare do I need?

There is no special aftercare needed in terms of topical applications for Theraclear™. The most important thing to avoid is UV radiation from sun exposure. Especially immediately after the procedure, but even weeks or months after the procedure, it is advised to avoid excessive, prolonged sun exposure even with sunblock applied. Depending on your skin condition and sun exposure, you may develop darker pigmentations in the treatment areas. You are advised to apply sunblock every 1-2 hours when outdoors and avoid outdoor exposure especially during the peak sunlight hours of the day.

How many treatments will I need?

Treating acne is a gradual process that requires multiple sessions and a collaboration of efforts to produce effective and long-lasting results. The number of Theraclear™ sessions required depends on various factors including the severity of your acne and lifestyle. Our doctor will advise you more on the treatment course that is right for your skin condition during the consultation. Typically it takes between 6-10 treatments for the acne improvement to be more obvious assuming that your lifestyle is in accordance with acne prevention and that the treatment is done at recommended intervals of 1 week. Once your treatment goals are met, CT can be done at 1 month intervals for maintenance purposes.

Is Theraclear™ safe?

Due to the device features and various safety settings, Theraclear™ is a very safe procedure. As with any procedure, there is always a risk of skin irritation which can lead to itchiness, redness or mild swelling after the treatment.
