Profhilo® Skin Booster Treatment in Singapore

Profhilo® can be injected into the cheeks and neck areas. Our aesthetic doctor at Aeon Medical, Dr. Jeslin, will analyse and assess your skin condition and needs to determine the specific areas for treatment.

Profhilo® is most effective when injected into or below the lower part of the deep skin layer (dermis) where pain can be more intense. A numbing cream will be applied prior to the treatment to reduce the pain, but mild-moderate pain can still be felt during the injection (depending on the individual variance of pain threshold). However, there are only 5 points of injection per cheek and 10 sites for the neck which is less than traditional skin booster treatments. After the procedure, the pain is usually gone.

After cleansing by our trained therapist, numbing cream will be applied to the areas to be treated for about 30 minutes. After the numbing cream is removed, the procedure itself will take about 10-20 minutes depending on the number of areas to be treated. After the injection treatment, you will be brought back to your private room for a post-care treatment to enhance the recovery process. The total time needed may be 1 – 1.5 hours in the clinic.

You may have multiple swellings (“bumps”) and some redness on the injection sites for 1-2 days after the treatment. You are advised to stay indoors for 24-48 hours after the treatment to avoid external damage from the sun, pollutants, or cosmetics. The visible “bumps” will usually subside within 24 hours.

You should not apply make-up for 24-48 hours to avoid unnecessary clogging of the injection sites, which may lead to acne or infection. You should also avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, and extreme temperatures, using saunas or Turkish baths, massages, and strenuous exercise for one week after the injection.

PROFHILO® is a hyaluronic acid gel, but in a less viscous state to allow the product to spread and distribute in a wider area. Other types of hyaluronic acid gel fillers are thicker (more viscous) and are mainly used to replace volume in specific small areas.

PROFHILO® risks of certain side effects are lesser than the thicker HA fillers, but you still need to be aware of the reported side effects from hyaluronic acid “filler” products.

Early side effects in the treated areas include:

• Pain
• Tenderness
• Redness
• Swelling
• Bruising
• Itching

These side effects usually resolve within 2-3 days, but some symptoms like swelling or bruising can last up to 10-14 days or longer.

Late side effects of HA at the injection sites may appear weeks or even months after the procedure. They include:

• Discolouration of the skin
• Granulomas (accumulation of hardened tissue)
• Delayed allergic reactions

Rarer and more serious complications include:

Abscesses: Hard and swollen sores that may contain pus which requires surgical drainage and subsequent scarring
Blocking of blood vessels, which may be permanent, causing necrosis (damage/death of skin), blindness, or stroke

These complications are more relevant when injecting “thicker” HA fillers to localised areas in “bolus” for volume enhancement, especially around the nose and eye areas.

A safety assessment of PROFHILO® published on 22 June 2020 (Cassuto et al., Safety Assessment of High- and Low-Molecular Weight Hyalurons (Profhilo®) as Derived from Worldwide Postmarketing Data, BioMed Research International, Vol 2020, Article ID 8159047, 9 pages) showed 12 adverse events from over 40,000 patients (and almost 300,000 syringes sold) from February 2015 to February 2018. Early-onset reactions such as swelling, redness, and bruising along with late-onset reactions such as swelling and nodules were reported. “In no case was the product held liable for direct damage.” All 12 events were resolved without any complications.
